Tracfone/Verizon has had a full year to be able to do what their website says and do a simple "bring your own phone" transfer to an eSim iPhone and they are telling me no one who upgraded to an unlocked iPhone 14 complained before me?

Just sign up for T-Mobile’s Essential Saver for a month, do the IUP program and choose T-Mobile, chalk it up to $55 for the service vs. what you save not using a major carrier, and use your unlocked phone on your MVNO. Apple’s iPhones come unlocked with the exceptions noted above.

I always buy unlocked but any locked phone, in the US, will be unlocked by the carrier when the terms of the contract are met.. or in the case of Verizon, 60 days after you buy it, contract or not. Factory unlocked and carrier unlocked are exactly the same.
When carriers have healthier competition about selling services instead of selling phones, carrier locking makes no sense as it only punishes your own customers. Prepaid carriers in the U.S. don't have contracts. Anybody can buy an iPhone 11 for $299 and walk out the door without signing anything.

You do have to pick a carrier, but financing with Apple Card will absolutely get you an unlocked phone. It says right in the app where you select a carrier that there are only two scenarios where the phone will be locked when buying from Apple, both involve carrier financing (AT&T and Boost).
